Why Mama Rachel cycled from State House to UN offices in Gigiri

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto on Tuesday cycled from State House Nairobi to Gigiri for the UN-Habitat Assembly, covering approximately 10.8 kilometers.

The exercise dubbed ‘Mama Cycling’ saw a team of cyclists join the first lady in the course.

Dressed in full cycling gear, with a jegging write ‘Kenya’ on the sides, Mama Rachel was seen on the first row.

Upon arrival at the UN offices, the first lady in a speech said the reason for cycling was for her and the team to celebrate the launch of the Global Alliance of Cities for Road Safety to promote safe cycling and sustainable transport, in partnership with the UN.

“As we ride through our memories and experiences, let's promote respect between drivers and cyclists. Together we can create a society that values sustainable transport, promotes equality, and builds a safer future,” she said.

Mama Rachel added that the experience reminded her of her childhood days while growing up in Kakamega, saying she loves riding

“We would use our bare feet as breaks and it was worth it. Those for me remain my happiest memories, it doesn’t matter how many times I fell but the joy it gave me was undeniable,” she narrated.

“I am happy to have participated in this morning's cycle ride.”

She said that her office advocates for safe cycling, adding that citizens need to cultivate a culture where they care more about each other.

“Our aim is to raise awareness of the importance of cycling and its contribution towards achievements of the sustainable goals,” she said.

“Let us use our voice of influence to encourage our friends and families to join us.”      BY THE STAR
