‘Sodom And Gomorrah’: Worrying Trend Among Gen Z Engaging In ‘Open’ Relationships

Gen Z are known to be a daring generation – the kind that will walk out of a job on the first day when they ‘just don’t feel the vibes’; the kind that will jump into opening a business straight out of high school, saying they don’t need to go to university and that they will retire by 30; the kind who like to have fun because YOLO (you only live once); and also as it turns out, the kind who view open relationships as a ‘normal’ thing.

Welcome to the world of ‘poly dating’ or ‘throuples’ as some call it.

Meet Chanelle* (not her real name), a 19-year-old college student who is in an open relationship where she dates two men who happen to know each other.

"We just find a way to co-exist in the relationship without any problems," she told Wananchi Reporting.

Those involved in poly dating define it as a relationship composed of three or more people.

Despite the dangers that lurk in terms of a rise in cases of STIs and crimes of passion, some Gen Z members are involved in the promiscuous behaviour.

“We are no longer living in the old era. We are the Gen-Z with a different definition of dating," says Shawn, a third-year University student.

To this group, the concept of one partner is 'tiresome and boring.'

People in these relationships also do so for fun and some for money.

"Regarding Gen-Z, the definition of dating will shock you. According to them, their understanding of dating is not within the purview of procreation or marriage. Dating to them means choosing a partner through sampling - meaning having multiple partners simultaneously as one decides the preferable person to marry. This process also involves engaging in sexual activities," Says a relationship counsellor, Peris Njeri.

While there is not much data yet on how many Kenyans, specifically young people, are in throuple or poly dating relationships, the throuple concept has gained some prominence.

Those involved in the activity say they are aware of the dangers that come with it; hence they ‘use protection’. However, as a counselor says, “The decision to engage in such relationships is not a wise decision, even though one says they are using protection. There are many other issues that come along with such arrangements and that is how you hear of crimes of passion, because while one person might be agreeable to dating more than one person, another might develop feelings of resentment and jealousy and not long after, there might be cases of violence and we have seen that some even lead to death and murder.”

According to research, a significant number of Kenyans who have chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease, do not seek treatment because they do not know they have it and the disease can lead to infertility.      BY CITIZEN DIGITAL
