Reconstruction of vandalised schools in Turkana begins – Kindiki

The government has started the reconstruction of schools that were vandalised by bandits in Turkana County at a cost of Sh100 million.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki made the revelation in a statement on Wednesday saying already, KDF troops and NYS officers have been deployed for the exercise.

"Kenya Defence Forces and National Youth Service officers will be deployed to reconstruct all schools that were vandalised by bandits and armed criminals in Turkana County at a cost of Ksh 100m," Kindiki said.

The reconstruction follows the ongoing security operation in the county and across five other bandit-prone counties of North Rift which Kindiki previously said has succeeded in flushing out criminal elements.

Kindiki first spoke about the reconstruction on May 23 during a status update on the security situation in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana, and West Pokot counties.

"The money has already been released and our officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will help us in the reconstruction. We must make sure that this place remains out of bounds to bandits for the rest of our time," Kindiki said then.

On February 13, Kindiki declared Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia, and Samburu counties as ‘disturbed’ and ‘dangerous’ prompting the deployment of the multi-agency security personnel to smoke out bandits and criminals that were wreaking havoc in the region.     BY THE STAR
