It only happens in Kenya! Ruto takes swipe on Uhuru over opposition role

President William Ruto on Wednesday weighed into the political turn of events that succeeded the August 9, presidential elections which saw him declared the winner.

Ruto, who had fallen out with his predecessor former President Uhuru Kenyatta, had to battle veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga who had teamed up with his former boss to deny him the top seat.

Remembering how tough and unique the battle was, the President described it as one of a kind that can only be identified with Kenya.

"It only happens in Kenya that in our last election, the opposition leader became the government candidate and the sitting president of the government became the opposition candidate. As things would be,  the opposition candidate who was the then sitting deputy president, won the election," he said.

"The sitting president then handed over power to his deputy and went ahead to become the leader of the opposition party. That only happens in Kenya."

Ruto said that he was sidelined after Uhuru and Raila's handshake, a move that culminated in his boss supporting the opposition candidate.

He spoke during the National Prayer Breakfast held at Safari Park in Nairobi.

During the same event, Ruto said he asked for forgiveness from Uhuru during last year's National Prayer Breakfast.

He added that it was quite a coincidence that this year's theme is all about reconciliation.

"I remember during the 2022 prayer breakfast I was asking for forgiveness from my friend the former President Uhuru Kenyatta, it is interesting that in our first prayer meeting, we are discussing forgiveness," he said.

"It is not necessary that we will always agree, but it is better to work towards the betterment of our country."         BY THE STAR
