I'll reject Finance Bill - MP Salasya tells off Ruto over alleged threat

A day after President William Ruto proposed an open ballot for the Finance Bill 2023 to know the MPs opposing it, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has said he will reject it.

In a statement on Monday, Salasya frowned on the way the president was "treating" MPs.

He said the Members of Parliament had profound respect for the Head of State, adding that he ought to do the same and outline the reasons why the Azimio MPs should pass the Bill.

"I have not liked the way Ruto is treating MPs. There is a problem with Ruto, he is treating MPs like rubbish, nitaangusha hiyo bill ata kama kura yangu ni moja (I will fail that bill even if it's just with my one vote)," he said.

"Ruto is operating as if we are being paid from his own pocket, he is not the first person to run an economy."

Speaking on Sunday during the thanksgiving service for Forestry CS Soipan Tuya in Narok, Ruto said he was waiting to see those against the plan, saying they would have denied the youth employment and affordable houses.

He said elected workers were enjoying low mortgages, owing to Kenyans’ taxes.

"I agree that every MP should be known on which side he has voted. I am waiting for the MPs who will vote against the government agenda to give youth, the majority who voted for the employment," he said.

"I am waiting for the MPS who will vote against housing which affords Kenyans to own a decent home when you are getting a mortgage because of the taxes paid by the people of Kenya of three percent."

In a rejoinder, Salasya said he did not need the mortgage, daring the president to remove it.

"I don’t need the mortgage. If they want I give them back the money," the first time MP added.    BY THE STAR
