Beauticians gift cancer patients at KNH with wigs, makeup kits

Forty cancer patients receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital have a reason to smile.

This is after beauticians from Wigs and Wings Drive donated an assortment of beauty products to the patients undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital's Cancer Treatment Centre.

The event, organised by the KNH patient navigation programme led by the Lay Navigator at the CTC Wilson Mosbey, saw the patients get makeup kits, wigs as well as manicure and pedicure services.

A lay navigator acts as a link between patients and care providers to facilitate clinical and supportive care services.

The role is that of a single point of contact among referring providers, patients and other clinical caregivers for the purpose of empowering patients in dealing with the disease and the treatment.

Tabitha Wangari, a lay navigator and Winnie Kerubo and Esther Nyaga who are Clinical Navigators, took turns to give health talks on how to manage side effects of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

"They emphasised the need for registration of NHIF to relieve the burden of the cost of treatment," KNH said in a statement.

"The team successfully helped restore confidence to the women as they were all smiles after the transformation," the hospital added.

In the 2023-24 Budget estimates presented in Parliament on Thursday, Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u proposed Sh500 million for strengthening of cancer centre management at KNH.

He further proposed and an additional Sh155 million for the establishment of regional cancer centres across the country   BY THE STAR
