Top KCPE girl reports to Form 1 with hen for fee & empty box

It was a happy ending for Dorice Akoth. She reported to Form 1 carrying a hen and an empty box after she lacked fees.

Having scored 374 marks in last year’s KCPE exam at a local primary school, Akoth was admitted to Sigoti Girls Complex Secondary School in Nyakach, Kisumu, but the family could not afford the fees and the joining requirements that include books and school uniforms.

Akoth wants to become a doctor, and would not let lack of fees stand in her way. She decided to chase her ambition.

Her father Hesborn Malachi Oliech’s efforts to apply for multiple scholarships flopped. He had sent his plea to some 10 scholarship-giving organisations.

Only Mpesa Foundation responded but in regret, rejecting his application. As time ticked and admitted Form 1s settled in, Akoth’s hope of pursuing her dreams was slowly dissipating.

The father was so devastated but with the current economic status and hard time, he did not know how to help out his daughter.

With no help coming their way, he decided to take his girl in tow, have her carry the metal box he had managed to get and pick his best hen, and off they went to the school.

The plan was to talk the school principal into allowing the girl's admission and work out how to get the materials and the fee as time went by.

"So, on Tuesday, I began my journey from Kobura ward in Nyando constituency after hiking a lift from a well wisher to Sigoti Girls Complex Secondary School,” the father said.

He added, “My daughter was worried at home, people were joining schools but she was there. I didn't know what to do because I could not even afford the day school, so I told her to prepare to go to the school she got an admission, God will come to our aid.”

At the school, Oliech’s idea was a tough sell. While the school remained sympathetic to him, having only come with an empty box and a hen, they encouraged him to try a little more to get the requirements.

Luck would smile on him on his way, as he met some journalists.

The reporters connected the distraught father with his area MCA Vincent Obuya who quickly took up the matter.

He inquired about Akoth’s KCPE exam score, the fee details and the admission requirements and at once got her in class.

He wired Sh60,000 to the school to cater for her fee and admission requirement, settling her in class.

“My daughter and I are happy and can’t thank the MCA enough. When he was contacted, he just asked the marks my daughter got, after being told, he asked about the fees and requirement of which he sent immediately including pocket money to my girl. We say than you,” the father said.

The school principal Joyce Abuya confirmed that the student reported with an empty box carrying a chicken while accompanied by the father.

“They wanted to talk to the school to allow the student begin her classes even though they din't have the basic requirements,” she said.

She added that by God’s grace, the journalists who were following up the matter alerted the Central Nyakach MCA of the case within Nyakach subcounty.

“I am happy to say that the MCA responded swiftly, sent Sh60,000 to cater for the student’s fees, uniforms among other basic requirements for her admission,” the principal said.

She said the student has joined the school.

“We are here for the student and will help her achieve her dreams and goals of becoming a doctor.”
