Nine detained SSU officers to take DNA test

 

Nine police officers formally from the disbanded Special Services Unit will have their DNA samples taken, DPP Noordin Haji has said.

In a statement, Haji said this will also include four other officers arrested on November 9.

"The prosecution sought for variation of court orders initially granted on November 10, to allow the National Police Service and Internal Affairs Unit to escort all suspects for DNA testing," he said.

The officers had on November 23 written to the DPP on why they have not been taken for DNA testing.

Kahawa law court chief magistrate Diana Mochache had earlier ruled that the suspects be escorted for a DNA test, and they may get a pathologist but at their own expense.

Haji who was giving an update on the case involving the disappearance of two Indians and a Kenyan also assured the nation that all those culpable will face the full force of the law.

He, however, reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law and respect for human rights even as he pursues to ensure justice is served.

Acknowledging the complexity of the matter, Haji said his office is working together with the police service and the internal affairs unit to have full-scale probe over the matter.

"Director of Public Prosecutions has indicated that the office relies on facts, evidence and the law to appropriately consider criminal culpability of any and or all of the suspects, to make the decision to charge pursuant to Article 157 of the Constitution," the statement reads.

The Indians-Mohamed Zaid Sami Kidwai, Zulfiqar Ahmed Khan and their driver Nicodemus Mwania Mwange-have been missing since July 23.

They are said to have been abducted near Ole Sereni and driven away in an unmarked car.

Their car was found at the scene.

Reports indicate they were part of a team that had come to Kenya to join an IT team for President William Ruto to run the election campaigns.

The matter is scheduled for mention on January 16 at the Kahawa law Courts.

The case came for court directions on December 1 where the suspects were released on a Sh500,000 bond.
