Number of visitors to Mama Ngina Waterfront doubles

Mombasa's iconic public recreation park, Mama Ngina Waterfront is seeing an increase in the number of people visiting it for recreation.

Parks Coordinator Ali Noor said that on average, the park receives between 300-500 visitors on weekdays with the numbers doubling up on weekends and public holidays.

He said the park can comfortably hold up to 25,000 people with the cabro paved areas holding slightly above 20,000 persons.

It was rehabilitated at a cost of Sh460 million.

Noor spoke when he received a donation of litter bins from the Tourism Fund.

''We have today started a long journey to partner with the management of Mama Ngina Waterfront by ensuring that the surroundings remain clean,'' said John Mutua, the TF Coast Regional Manager.

Noor said that they are keen to ensure that the park lives up to its billing of being a tourist attraction site of international status.

"The donation we have just received serves as a clear testimony of the seriousness we hold to having a cleaner environment here. Apart from the century-old baobab trees that dot several spots, we have introduced the planting of indigenous trees in the park," he said.

Environment Trust of Kenya, a local environmental lobby group has taken the lead and partnered with the Park's management to plant the indigenous trees around the park.

Noor added that due to an increase in the number of visitors, they have put up speed bumps on the road that cuts across the park.

The waterfront features a palm tree-lined walkway from the Likoni Ferry Crossing to its south through to the Mombasa Golf Club to the north.

These two points are the entry and exit points both ways and are now marked by huge monumental gates.

From its initial layout of a watching bay area carved out of a small rising cliff facing the Likoni channel, the waterfront park has a built amphitheatre, cultural centre, and a sun-drenched 2.1km long promenade and space for food vendors.

The park has always been a place for leisure resting, walking, jogging, and riding.

Noor said they are in the final phase of rolling the provision of high-speed internet at the site courtesy of the Ministry of ICT.    BY THE STANDARD MEDIA
