Police thwart attempts by Sidindi residents to siphon fuel from tanker

A tanker ferrying diesel from Kenya to Uganda overturned at Sidindi Shopping Centre in Ugunja, Siaya County, on Friday afternoon.

Members of the public started siphoning fuel from the tanker before they were dispersed by the police. According to James Osiema, the police arrived on time to stop the public from siphoning fuel.

“The tanker was en-route to Uganda when it overturned, people carrying jerricans and tins arrived at the accident scene to siphon fuel,” said Mr Osiema.

Siaya County Commander Michael Muchiri warned the public against siphoning fuel.

“The tanker was headed to Uganda when the driver lost control of the vehicle while avoiding to hit a bodaboda rider before it overturned,” said Mr Muchiri.

He added that siphoning fuel from trucks is a criminal offense and advised the public to run away from scenes of such accidents

The incident happened almost six months after a similar one at Malanga where 22 people who had gone to siphon fuel from a tanker died.

In July 13, 1998, more than 33 people lost their lives while trying to siphon fuel from a petrol truck involved in an accident.   BY DAILY NATION
