Mt Kenya will not abandon Ruto—Kuria

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria says the Mt Kenya region will not go back on their decision to back DP William Ruto bid for presidency.

Kuria said it is President Uhuru Kenyatta who told the Kikuyu community that Ruto was best suited to succeed him when his term ends.

“Sometimes I hear people claiming that Kikuyu’s are cheating Ruto and they will abandon him at the last minute. Unless its you the Kalenjin community who will abandon Ruto. For us in Mt Kenya we made a decision and we will not turn back,” said the MP in Nandi county.

Kuria was speaking in Mosoriot during the burial of Mzee Moses Kireger where he was with area Senator Samson Cherargei. He read Ruto’s condolence message to the family.

The MP said it was difficult to understand why the same people who Ruto helped ascend to power had turned against him.

“When he helped them he was very good, but now that he also wants to go up they tell us that he is now bad.”

He said it would be difficult to change the hearts of Mt Kenya residents to turn against the DP.

"As the Kikuyu community we are investors, and when we decide to invest anywhere, we never turn back," he said.

Kuria at the same time said President Kenyatta respects the constitution and would not seek to extend his tenure after next year. He said the President would retire as required by the constitution.

“Just as the sun rises from East and sets in the West everyday, take it from me that Uhuru will retire next year and we will have elections in August as required by the constitution,” Kuria said.

The lawmaker said the DP had been undermined extensively and were it not for God he would be finished politically.

“I used to tell the DP to be careful with some of his friends but because he is someone with a good heart he thinks everyone is like him. He has been frustrated and tormented by the same people he helped. Because we are his friends we have also suffered the same fate,” Kuria said.

He urged the Kalenjin community to stand with the DP but allow him to go outside the region and seek support from other communities.

The MP and Cherargei said the DP and his hustlers team were ready to accept the results of next year’s polls should they lose.

“We are not like others who instead of respecting the will of the people, they are seeking to change the constitution to fit them,” Cherargei said.

The Senator said no one should change the date of the general election which is entrenched in the law.

“Moses I know Uhuru is your constituent in Gatundu South. Please go and tell him that we must have elections next year as per the constitution and he should not be misled by some of his allies to stick to power,” Cherargei said.

He said former President Moi had all the powers during his tenure but he never attempted to change the date of the elections.    BY THE STAR
