Kwale records 200 of road accidents since January

Kwale has recorded over 200 cases of road accidents since the beginning of January this year, according to county police records.

The area police commander Joseph Nthenge said the county has been listed as one among the regions with an alarming number of road accidents in Kenya.

He said most accidents were caused by boda boda and tuk-tuk drivers.

“So many motorists drive recklessly like they never went to driving schools and boda boda are notorious,” he said.

Speeding and flouting of traffic rules by most drivers were also mentioned as immediate causes of road accidents in the county.

By February about 60 per cent of road accidents in Matuga constituency alone were reported to have been caused by reckless boda boda riders.

A big number of accidents happened along the Mombasa-Ukunda-Lunga-Lunga highway followed by Kwale-Kombani.

Nthenge said the accidents have led to the loss of many innocent lives while some sustain permanent body injuries.

“Many have died, and human bodies don’t have spare parts, a situation that left some survivor cripples forever,” he said.

He said majority of the victims of road accidents in Kwale are passengers whose lives are cut short by arrogant drivers.

Recently, over five people died and several others seriously injured in a terrific road accident at Tiwi Map River (Mabriva) after two Nissans went head-on collision within Matuga.

The officer emphasized motorists to elevate the enforcement of existing traffic rules to bring sanity on the roads.

He warned to take stern legal action against the perpetrators.

At the same time, he urged the public transport sector and locals to observe Covid-19 public health directives.
