Kilifi KRA officer, driver arrested for demanding bribe from Tanzanian

bribe
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a senior Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officer and his driver for allegedly soliciting and receiving a Sh10,000 bribe from a Tanzanian.
EACC detectives arrested Mr Albert Bett, the KRA officer in charge of the Kilifi station, and his driver, Mr Joel Zaddock, after receiving the bribe from Ms Zamda Swaleh, a Tanzanian.
Mr Ignatius Wekesa, the EACC upper coast regional boss, said the anti-graft agency arrested the two after they received treated money from the complainant in order to release her vehicle bearing Tanzanian number plates.
“Zamda Swaleh accompanied by her husband had filed a complaint in our offices that the two officers had demanded a bribe of Sh20,000 to release her vehicle which had been impounded and we immediately began investigations,” he said.
CAR DOCUMENTS
Mr Wekesa said that the complainant was driving in Kilifi town on June 24 when she was stopped by the two KRA officers who demanded documents to show why she was driving a vehicle with Tanzania number plates.
“Upon [receiving] the documents, they refused to return them, impounded the vehicle and demanded a bribe of Sh20,000,” Mr Wekesa said.
“A complaint was filed in our office and today (Wednesday) the two suspects were arrested after receiving Sh10,000 treated money before releasing the impounded vehicle without any charge,” he added.
Mr Wekesa said the two suspects will be taken to Malindi Police Station where they will be released on police cash bail as investigations are concluded before they are charged.
The EACC boss called on government officers to practice integrity during the Covid-19 pandemic.
