Truck with 20,000 litres of methanol impounded in Migori
Police in Nyatike, Migori County on Tuesday evening impounded a truck carrying 81 containers with more than 20,000 litres of methanol.
The truck, which was intercepted in Lwanda township in North Kadem Location, was carrying the containers which were covered with bags of maize in order to conceal the illegal consignment.
Nyatike Deputy County Commissioner Andrew Mutua said that the driver and his turn boy were arrested.
However, the occupants of a Toyota Probox car which was escorting the truck escaped and were being pursued, he said.
"The arrested suspects are being held at Migori Police Station awaiting to be arraigned in court. The truck and the consignment have been taken to Kenya Revenue Authority (offices) in Isebania for more tests," Mr Mutua said.
DESTINED FOR NAIROBI
Mr Mutua further revealed that the illegal substance originated from Tanzania through Sirare-Isebania border and was destined for Nairobi and parts of Central region.
"According to our preliminary investigations, the dangerous substance was smuggled in from Tanzania through the porous Kenya-Tanzania border at Isebania. It was headed to Nairobi and Central Kenya," added Mr Mutua.
He said police are also looking for the owner of the truck.
"We are in pursuit of the owner of the truck as we suspect that this is a business that has been going on for some time," he said.
