Postmortem: MP Ng’eno, 5 others died from severe head, chest Injuries

A postmortem on the six victims of the fatal chopper crash in Mosop, Nandi County, has confirmed they died from multiple injuries to the head, chest, and spine.

The postmortem, conducted at Lee Funeral Home and led by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor, established that the victims suffered severe trauma during the crash. They also sustained serious burns after the helicopter burst into flames on impact.

Those who perished in the crash include Emurua Dikir MP Johana Ng’eno, Robert Kipkoech Keter, Amos Kimwetich Rotich, Nicholas Kosgei, Wycliffe Kiprotich Rono and the pilot, retired Colonel George Were.

The helicopter went down on Saturday at about 4.45pm at the edge of Chepkieb Forest in Mosop, shortly after attempting to take off from a makeshift landing site near the forest, according to witnesses and officials.

Some witnesses speculated that poor visibility caused by ongoing rains may have contributed to the accident. However, investigations into the crash are still ongoing.

The postmortem has paved the way for burial preparations, with families of the victims attending the exercise.

A memorial service for Ng’eno will be held on Wednesday, March 4, at the Nairobi Baptist Church, giving friends, colleagues, and constituents an opportunity to pay their respects.

A traditional night vigil will follow on Thursday, March 5, in line with Kipsigis cultural rites. He will be buried on Friday at his Narok home. Burial arrangements for the other victims are ongoing.

Leaders across the political divide have eulogised the victims, describing them as dedicated and selfless individuals.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula termed Ng’eno an exemplary leader whose dedication to public service and parliamentary conduct set a high standard for lawmakers.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Wetang’ula described the death of the three-term legislator as a profound loss to Parliament and the nation.

He praised Ng’eno’s leadership as chair of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning, and Public Works, noting that under his stewardship the committee played a key role in shaping the Affordable Housing Act, 2024, aimed at expanding access to decent and affordable housing.

The Speaker has since constituted an ad hoc committee to liaise with the late MP’s family on funeral arrangements and urged Kenyans to remember him for his integrity, service, and lasting contribution to the country’s political landscape.
