Ida Odinga leads family in receiving Raila memorabilia as PS Sing’Oei pays tribute to his diplomatic legacy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally presented a collection of memorabilia honouring the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, in a ceremony that celebrated his enduring influence on Kenya’s foreign policy, democracy, and Africa’s place in global affairs.

The memorabilia was handed over on behalf of the ministry by Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’Oei, during a solemn event held at the Odinga family home in Karen.

The presentation brought together family members, diplomats, and friends, underscoring the national and international stature Raila Odinga commanded in life.

Sing’Oei said the messages and tributes contained in the memorabilia went beyond condolences, representing global recognition of Raila’s contribution to diplomacy and governance.

“The messages we present today reflect more than sympathy; they reflect recognition,” Sing’Oei said.

“They acknowledge Baba’s contribution to Kenya’s foreign policy outlook, his belief in principled diplomacy, Pan-African solidarity, infrastructure-led integration, and Africa’s rightful voice in global affairs.”

The memorabilia consists of four volumes.

The first is a collection of tributes from across the world, capturing Raila Odinga’s impact on foreign policy and international relations, including original messages from various heads of state and government.

The second volume consolidates tributes and messages received from institutions, organisations, and individuals, reflecting the breadth of his influence beyond Kenya’s borders.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mama Ida Odinga offered an intimate reflection on her life with the veteran statesman, drawing both warmth and emotion from those present.

“We’ve been married for 52 years, and all those years we had our good and bad times,” she said.

“Being Raila’s wife was great fun, and it’s the best time of my life.”

Mama Ida also shared previously unknown details surrounding Raila’s final wishes, revealing that the family was surprised by his request to be buried within 72 hours.

“I do not know when Raila wrote his will requesting to be buried within 72 hours. It was a surprise to us,” she said. “Seventy-two hours is a very short time. Everything had to be done very quickly, and we are grateful to President William Ruto, who stepped in to ensure Raila’s wishes were honoured.”

She noted that the family continues to receive visitors and messages of condolence from across the country and abroad, a testament to Raila’s far-reaching legacy.

“Today, we are still receiving visitors and messages of condolence. I know this will not end soon, and our homes remain open. You are all welcome,” she said.

During the ceremony, Sing’Oei also conveyed messages from Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, affirming the ministry’s readiness to support the Odinga family in establishing a museum in Bondo.

The proposed museum will honour and commemorate the life, legacy, and contributions of Raila to Kenya and the African continent.

In recognition of Raila’s role in advancing democracy and peaceful conflict resolution, the government announced plans to establish an annual conference named after him.

The forum will bring together scholars, statesmen, and practitioners of diplomacy and democracy from Africa and around the world, and will be hosted annually in Nairobi, subject to the family’s consent.

Sing’Oei further conveyed his personal congratulations to mama Ida on her nomination as Kenya’s ambassador and representative to the United Nations offices in Nairobi and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

He expressed confidence in her future contribution to global sustainability and climate action.

“I am confident, Your Excellency, that you will make a profound mark on issues that continue to grow in importance, sustainable development, environmental sustainability, and climate change,” he said.

He also paid tribute to Raila’s ideals, saying his legacy should continue to inspire Kenya to choose dialogue over division, justice over expediency, and unity over fear.
