A New Shepherd for the Coast

In a move that has energized the Catholic faithful, Pope Leo XIV has officially appointed Bishop Dominic Kimengich as the Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Mombasa. The announcement, made on January 28, marks a strategic step for the Vatican in one of East Africa’s most historic Christian hubs.

Bishop Kimengich, a seasoned canon lawyer who has spent the last six years shepherding the Diocese of Eldoret, will now assist Archbishop Martin Kivuva Musonde. Under Church law, a “coadjutor” holds the automatic right of succession, positioning Kimengich to lead the coastal archdiocese upon Kivuva’s eventual retirement.

“Our calling is like that of soldiers,” Kimengich stated during his acceptance. “We move to serve anywhere we are called.” Known for his peace-building efforts in the banditry-prone North Rift, his move to Mombasa is seen as a vital addition to a region that prioritizes inter-religious dialogue and social justice.
