Jason Derulo is a global icon known for his smooth vocals and viral TikTok dances. But in a recent sit-down, the 37-year-old singer revealed a more vulnerable side.
Speaking with journalist Graham Bensinger, he opened up about his current relationship status.
Derulo admitted he never planned to be single at this stage of his life. Looking back at his younger years, he had very different expectations for his future.
A Change in Plans
“Man, I thought I was going to marry a lot of girls,” Derulo said during the interview. He reflected on his high school years and his childhood sweetheart.
At that time, he believed he would have settled down long ago.
Instead, the singer finds himself navigating his late thirties without a partner. He expressed surprise at how his life has turned out compared to his teenage dreams.
“There’s never in a million years did I think I was going to be 37, single.”
The “Tainted” Perspective
Many fans might assume that a globetrotting career and a busy schedule make it hard to find love. However, Derulo told Bensinger that his work is not the primary reason he is alone.
Instead, he claimed that his experiences in the entertainment world have changed his perspective.
He explained that he has witnessed things that have made him cynical about modern relationships. He even described himself as feeling “tainted” by what he has observed over the years.
“I’ve seen too much in my life,” he remarked during the candid conversation.
The Reality of the Nightlife
Derulo spoke about witnessing behaviour that has shaken his faith in commitment. He mentioned seeing married women and those with partners acting in ways he found shocking in social settings.
He recalled seeing women “leaving their boyfriends on the spot” or abandoning their partners while out at clubs. These experiences have left him wary of the stability of modern romances.
Derulo noted that he was holding back the more extreme details of what he has seen. He referred to his explanation as the “super G version,” implying that the full reality of his observations is much more intense.
“I’m giving you the super G version. Because I don’t want this to be the headline.”
Background on Derulo’s Past
Outside of this interview, Derulo’s dating life has frequently been in the public eye. He famously had a high-profile, three-year relationship with singer Jordin Sparks that ended in 2014.
More recently, he was in a relationship with influencer Jena Frumes. The pair welcomed a son, Jason King, in May 2021.
According to public reports, they announced their split just months after their son was born.
Since then, Derulo has been focused on co-parenting while maintaining his status as one of the most-followed individuals on social media.
