Munyua eyes another Ally Pally Shock against Dutch star Doets

Kenyan darts sensation David Munyua will be hoping to extend his flying form at the PDC World Darts Championship at the Alexandra Palace stage today (Monday) when he takes on Dutchman Kevin Doets in the second round of the global show.

‎‎Munyua unequivocally announced himself last Thursday, producing a stunning comeback from two sets down to outgun world number 18 Mike De Decker 3-2 in the opening round.

‎The 30-year-old veterinarian now faces another stern examination against world number 41 Doets, a seasoned campaigner with a formidable resume. The Dutchman boasts victory at the 2019 Catalonia Open under the British Darts Organisation (BDO) banner and has claimed two PDC Challenge Tour titles.

‎At the previous edition of the World Championships, Doets underlined his pedigree by reaching the last 16. Munyua’s progression to the second round has already guaranteed him a Sh4.3 million payday.

‎‎Despite the historic first-round triumph, Munyua admitted the outcome exceeded his own expectations. ‎“It is amazing. I didn’t expect it. But now it has happened, and I’m happy about it,” he said.

‎‎He stressed that the moment resonated far beyond personal achievement, describing it as a landmark for both Kenya and the African continent.

‎‎“It is a very big moment for the sport itself, for Africa and Kenya. It is humbling,” he added. Munyua believes his display has opened doors for the sport to grow and gain a firmer footing locally and across the region.

‎“The sport can grow. I’m happy I did my best,” he said. Reflecting on the dramatic comeback against De Decker, Munyua pointed to composure and self-belief as the decisive factors. ‎“To be honest, I just kept my cool and decided to play my own game,” he explained.

‎“I just decided to push on and see where I could get, and I am very happy with the outcome. It was either do-or-die because Mike is a top player.”

‎Munyua’s fearless display earned widespread praise both at home and abroad, with President William Ruto leading the tributes.

‎“Congratulations, David Munyua, on your remarkable victory in round one at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship,” President Ruto wrote.‎

‎“By defeating Belgium’s Mike De Decker, an established champion, with a fearless comeback from two sets down, you delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history.”

‎‎The Head of State urged Munyua to keep pushing and aim for the ultimate prize. ‎“You have also made history for Kenya as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London, and announced your arrival on the global darts stage,” he added.

‎‎“As you advance to the next stage, know that the nation stands behind you. Bring the trophy home.”
