Two gold miners found dead after mining shaft collapses in Migori

Two gold miners were found dead after a shaft they were working on collapsed in Macalder, Migori County.

Two others were seriously injured in the December 16, 2025 incident, police and locals said.

The group was working on a shaft in the area to mine gold when it collapsed and trapped them, police said.

This is the latest such incident in the area amid renewed calls for improved safety for miners. Police said one of the deceased was a Tanzanian national who was working at the site.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

There has been a rise in deaths at mining sites across the country, with the most notorious areas including Kakamega, Siaya, West Pokot and Vihiga counties.

Officials have launched campaigns to address the menace, although some miners have resisted the efforts, saying mining is their only source of livelihood.

The mining business remains popular among some locals despite the dangers it poses, officials said. Several site managers are under investigation over incidents reported in the past year.

Officials have blamed, among other factors, greed for the recurring tragedies.

Elsewhere, police in Mosocho, Kisii County, are investigating an incident in which a 62-year-old woman was found dead after a suspected drowning.

The body of Gladys Bwari was found floating in the Mogusi River long after she had drowned. The woman had been at her home before her body was discovered on Wednesday evening.

Police said investigations are ongoing to establish whether she drowned or was killed and her body dumped in the river.

The body, which had no visible physical injuries, was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Meanwhile, police in Kapsabet, Nandi County, are investigating an incident in which a civilian firearm holder lost his pistol from his house.

The owner was hosting visitors when he later realised the weapon was missing from his locker.

The Taurus pistol, loaded with 20 bullets, was stolen from the safe in which it had been locked, police said.

Police said about 1,000 people were at the home during a party on December 16 when the theft is believed to have occurred.

Officers visited the scene as part of ongoing investigations.
