HX5 FC were crowned champions of the inaugural Shell Lubricants Mechanics Sports Day football tournament after a 3–0 win over Vivo FC in Nairobi.
Five teams—HX7, HX3, HX5, Ultra and Vivo—contested the football title. HX7 opened with a 3–1 victory over Ultra. HX5 edged HX3 1–0 in their opener.
The group stage belonged to 31-year-old John Mwaura, who scored five goals against HX3. His haul included a header, a chip, a combination finish, a flick and a solo effort.
“I am extremely happy with my victory,” he said. “We thank Shell for giving back to the mechanics and the players.” He was named top scorer.
HX5 advanced with a 2–0 semi-final win over HX7.
The final, officiated by Francis Osano, swung after the break.
Vivo FC dominated the first half but failed to convert two clear chances. HX5 took control when Mohamed Tafauti struck the opener.
Bernard Ogutu added a second. Antony Kamuna sealed the result with a late goal. Tafauti was named MVP for his consistent influence.
In darts, Simon Maina Nderitu topped a field of 10, winning three games and setting a new event record of 78 points. His steady rounds of 57 and 21 secured the title. Emmanuel Baraza finished second.
The eight-ball pool event attracted 14 competitors where John Mbugua and Philemon Otiti shared top honours.
Otiti said: “It was a relaxed day, glad to have family out — the kids are delighted.”
Four teams battled in obstacle races featuring potato runs, tyre challenges, product stacking, sponge tasks and sack races. Vivo, led by Ramco Kinana, won in 03:08:11.
Ultra placed second in 03:48:19. HX3 finished third in 04:11:79.
Managing Director Peter Murungi said the event recognised the role mechanics play in the company’s lubricant network.
“Mechanics are the backbone of our lubricant ecosystem,” he said.
