The Kenyan entertainment fraternity is preparing to bid farewell to the gifted Gengetone artist, Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui, widely known as Shalkido.
The young star passed away on 7 October 2025, following injuries sustained in a tragic hit-and-run road accident.
Activist Eric Omondi, who has publicly supported the late musician, has announced details for the industry-wide requiem mass.
Requiem Mass Details Confirmed by Eric Omondi
Mr. Eric Omondi, a prominent figure in philanthropy within the entertainment scene, confirmed that the requiem mass will take place this Wednesday. The service is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
It will be held at All Saints Cathedral, which is situated next to Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
Omondi called upon the entire industry—including Gengetone artists, gospel artists, actors, and comedians—to attend. He described the event as “a service for the industry” and “a service for the family”.
The aim is to ensure their brother receives “a well-deserved last respectable send off”.
“This is the best we can do to console the family to stand with the family to support the family.” — Eric Omondi.
Family Releases Burial Arrangements
Further details regarding the final farewell have been provided by Shalkido’s family. The family confirmed that the burial date remains Thursday, 16th October 2025.
The father of the deceased confirmed the location where Shalkido will be laid to rest.
“We shall put Shalkido to rest here at our home in Murera, at his grandmother’s residence,” the father stated.
Prior to the burial, a candle lighting ceremony is scheduled. This event will be held on the evening of Wednesday, 15th October. While the venue for the candle lighting was initially pending, family representatives later stated it would be held at Choma Zone in Ruiru.
Daily prayers are currently taking place every evening at the family’s grandmother’s residence in Kimbo, Matangi.
Tributes and Background to the Tragedy
Shalkido was known for his versatility, having worked as a Gengetone, Mugithi, and gospel artist, as well as a comedian and actor.
The accident that claimed his life occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 5 October 2025. Shalkido was riding a motorbike toward Nairobi after performing in Thika.
The crash took place on the main highway along Thika Road, between Githurai and Carwash, just before Roysambu.
He was rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH). Reports indicated he suffered severe internal brain injuries.
Doctors ultimately confirmed a diagnosis of brain death—the medical and legal term for death due to irreversible loss of all brain function.
The family confirmed they are “deeply grateful to all who stood by Shalkido in his most vulnerable moment, especially Mr. Eric Omondi, who gifted him a motorbike to help him rebuild.”
Both Eric Omondi and comedian Oga Obinna had previously provided crucial support to Shalkido. The family expressed immense gratitude for this assistance.
Crucially, the family released a statement urging the public to avoid speculation and blame. They clarified that they do not hold Mr. Omondi or Mr. Obinna “accountable for Shalkido’s passing,” having accepted that his death was a tragic accident.
