Wangila Wabomba has been elected the new Chairman of the Meru University Alumni Association, marking a generational shift in the leadership of one of Kenya’s rapidly growing academic communities.

The election took place during the Association’s Annual General Meeting held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi.

The meeting was presided over by former Head of Public Service, Ambassador Dr. Francis Muthaura, and marked the official end of tenure for the outgoing chairman, Prof. J. Kimathi. University stakeholders hailed the transition as a milestone for alumni engagement and institutional progress.

Wabomba’s election ushers in a new era defined by youthful energy, institutional memory, and visionary leadership.

Currently serving in Parliament and leading Wabomba Agroventure—a prominent agribusiness enterprise with a national footprint—Wabomba brings to the role a wealth of leadership experience and a deep personal connection to Meru University.

His leadership roots trace back to his time as Chairman of the Students’ Association of Meru University (SAMU), a period remembered for decisive action and student-centered reforms.

Notably, it was during his tenure that former Vice Chancellor Prof. J. Magambo stepped down, paving the way for the current administration led by Prof. Romanus Odhiambo.

Wabomba also left a lasting legacy through the creation of the Somesha Comrades Initiative, a financial support program that continues to aid needy students.

The initiative earned him widespread respect among students and alumni alike, solidifying his reputation as a transformative leader.

In his acceptance speech, Wabomba outlined an ambitious agenda aimed at deepening alumni involvement and strengthening the university’s development.

“My immediate goals include aggressively mobilising resources to build a sustainable alumni welfare kitty targeting needy students, and establishing regional alumni chapters across the country to foster unity, mentorship, and professional growth among graduates,” he said.

The AGM was attended by key university figures, including the Chair of the University Council, Prof. James Ireri Kanya, and Vice Chancellor Prof. Romanus Odhiambo.

Their participation underscored the strategic importance of alumni in influencing the institution’s future trajectory.

As one of the youngest individuals ever to lead the alumni body, Wangila Wabomba’s ascension signals a renewed commitment to intergenerational collaboration, alumni empowerment, and academic excellence.
