Pope Francis has been ailing for a while, and recent reports about his serious health condition have sparked widespread concern.
His struggles with illness have led many to wonder what would happen if the Pope passes away. Here’s a breakdown of the process that would follow:
1. Official Confirmation of Death
The Vatican must officially confirm the Pope’s death. Once declared, the Camerlengo (the Cardinal who oversees the Vatican during the interregnum) notifies senior church officials and the people of Rome.
2. Sealing of Papal Apartments
The Camerlengo then seals the papal apartments and other offices, symbolizing the end of the Pope’s rule.
3. Nine-Day Mourning Period
The Church enters a nine-day mourning period, during which various masses are held to honor the Pope’s life and legacy.
4. Burial
According to the Universi Dominici Gregis constitution, the Pope must be buried between the fourth and sixth day after his death. He is traditionally buried at St. Peter’s Basilica.
5. Election of a New Pope
The process of electing a new Pope, known as the conclave, begins 15-20 days after the Pope’s passing. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote.
Before voting, the cardinals take an oath of secrecy and are secluded in the Sistine Chapel, cut off from outside influences. The winning candidate must receive a two-thirds majority of the votes. If no decision is reached after several rounds, a day of prayer and reflection is held before resuming the vote.

Update on Pope Francis’ Health
The Vatican shared an update on the Pope’s health on Sunday. Pope Francis had difficulty breathing for several days before being admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14. “Doctors later diagnosed him with pneumonia in both lungs, referred to as ‘double pneumonia,’” said the Vatican.
The Vatican previously stated that Francis, 88, was in critical condition after a respiratory crisis. He was treated with oxygen therapy and required a blood transfusion.
Though the Pope remained in critical condition on Sunday, he “presented no further respiratory crisis,” the Vatican said. He continues to receive oxygen therapy through nasal cannulas. Some blood tests showed “initial, mild, renal insufficiency,” but it was under control, according to the Vatican.
