The Murang’a Assembly has given the county executive 60 days to upgrade Kangema Hospital to Level 4 status.
The MCAs issued the ultimatum after adopting a report on the facility’s audit and financial statements.
They cited gaps in staffing, medical equipment and land ownership that must be addressed before the upgrade.
Gaichanjiru MCA John Munyua, who moved the motion to adopt the report, said inadequate staffing and medical equipment were undermining the hospital’s capacity to deliver services expected of a Level 4 facility.
He urged the county government to deploy adequate health workers and provide the necessary equipment to improve service delivery and ensure the hospital meets the required standards.
Munyua also called for the transfer of the land on which the hospital stands to the county government within 60 days.
He said formalising ownership would allow the administration to invest public funds in the facility without land-related complications.
Under the adopted recommendations, the hospital’s accounting officer is required to work with the County Public Service Board within 60 days to harmonise staffing levels in line with the Kenya Quality Model for Health guidelines.
The accounting officer was also directed to ensure the hospital’s registration is upgraded to Level 4 with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council within the same period.
Kahumbu MCA Isaac Chefman Njoroge, who seconded the motion, said the hospital’s official classification must reflect its actual capacity and compliance with the required standards.
“If it is Level 3, then it should be Level 3 and meet the required standards. But if it is Level 4, then it must operate as a Level 4 facility,” Njoroge said.
The assembly called on the relevant county departments to implement the recommendations within the deadline to improve service delivery at the facility.
