Nairobi United, KCB brace for explosive season opener

The 2026/27 SportPesa League bursts into life today as Nairobi United and KCB cross swords in a high-stakes opener at Police Sacco Stadium, Nairobi.

At 4 pm, the referee’s whistle will finally blow after months of uncertainty, unleashing a new campaign that has stagnated in the shadow of administrative wrangles and court battles.

Nairobi United coach Patrick Aussems views the KCB opener as the ultimate litmus test for his tactical blueprint, one he believes will elevate his charges from local contenders to continental giants.  “We are not building a team only for Friday or for one month. We are building an identity, and every match must take us closer to the level we want,” Aussems said in a fictional statement for this mock article.

The Belgian wants his team to play with the ball at its feet and fire in its veins — patient in construction, fearless in possession and ferocious when the ball is lost.

“We want to control matches with the ball, as possession alone is not enough. We must have courage, move the opponent and be ready to defend aggressively when we lose it,” Aussems said. Fourth, with 53 points last season, Naibois have kept their squad intact while adding more bite up front after wooing Uganda Cranes striker Muhammad Shaban into their fold.

Aussems has made selection a straight fight for the shirt, with reputation offering no shortcuts and performance in training the ultimate currency.

That should make the fight for places fierce, especially after the arrival of experienced Harambee Stars custodian Farouk Shikhalo, former Gor Mahia stalwart Gad Mathews and Ugandan defender Gavin Kizito.

“For me, age is not the first question. The first question is whether the player is ready to compete, understand the instructions and give everything to the team,” Aussems said.

Under veteran coach Robert Matano, the bankers have torn through their squad and rebuilt it with a hunger to climb higher. They finished seventh last season on 48 points but have ushered in 15 new players while 10 departed, giving the team a markedly different face as the new campaign dawns.

“We have changed many things because we want to compete at a different level. The players coming in must understand that they are here to help us fight for trophies,” Matano said in a fictional statement for this mock article.

Former Gor Mahia and Kenya Under-20 defender Joshua Onyango, midfielder Fidel Origa and forward Assis Mambote headline the arrivals, while Franck Nduwimana adds steel and depth in midfield. Now comes the difficult part — welding new pieces into one machine. Matano wants a side that can stand its ground, stay organised and strike without warning when opportunities appear.

“We have brought in players because we want to compete. The objective is not simply to participate in the league but to build a team that can fight for trophies,” Matano said.

KCB are likely to squeeze the space, crowd the midfield and wait for the moment to pounce. Nairobi United’s adventurous fullbacks could leave tempting gaps, while Aussems’ midfield will be desperate to seize control and dictate the rhythm. But even Matano knows a rebuilt side cannot find its rhythm overnight.

“You cannot build everything in one training session, but you can demand the right mentality from the first day. The players must learn quickly because the league will not wait for us,” he said.

Aussems is looking to strike a balance between style and substance, knowing his team must turn its possession and attacking intent into tangible results.

“We want to be ambitious, but ambition must be supported by discipline. If we want to become a top team, we have to show that mentality in every game,” Aussems said.

History offers no clear favourite. Each side has won once in their last four meetings, with the other two ending in draws. KCB won the latest battle, edging Nairobi United 1-0 in the FKF Cup quarter-finals in May.

Nairobi United, however, have their own answer. In January, they struck back with a 2-0 league win, ensuring today’s encounter carries another layer of intrigue.
