The Eldoret National Polytechnic has earned international recognition after being ranked among the world’s most sustainable learning institutions.
The polytechnic was named the top TVET institution in Kenya and ranked 82nd in Africa in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, announced in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Globally, TENP was ranked 1,547th for overall sustainability.
The ranking is conducted by UI GreenMetric, an international non-profit initiative launched by the University of Indonesia in 2010. It brings together thousands of higher education institutions from 110 countries.
Institutions are evaluated across seven broad parameters: infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water conservation, transportation, education and research and governance and digitisation.
TENP chief principal Dr Charles Koech said the recognition reflected the institution’s commitment to creating an environmentally sustainable learning environment.
“This is a testament to our commitment to a green, clean and sustainable learning environment. Congratulations to the entire TENP family!” Dr Koech said.
The 2026 ranking is the 17th edition and features institutions from 110 countries, making it one of the largest global assessments focused on institutional sustainability performance.
Koech thanked the Board of Management, staff, students and the wider Eldoret community for their support.
“We are also proud of our government, especially President William Ruto, who has shown rare commitment to the growth of higher education in the country, particularly the TVET sector,” he said.
TENP has a student population of more than 20,000 learners and frequently hosts local and international delegations seeking to benchmark against its academic programmes and operations.
The global ranking adds to a growing list of achievements for the polytechnic. In April, students and tutors returned from Nyeri with 17 trophies after competing in the Kenya National Drama Festivals.
Koech, accompanied by senior managers, received the trophies and led the institution in celebrations.
He said the performance placed TENP in the national spotlight not only for academic excellence, but also for its strong showing in co-curricular activities and holistic student development.
