The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has extended the closure of Eldoret Road in Nairobi to December 30 to allow the contractor to complete construction of a vehicular bridge across the Nairobi River.
The road was initially scheduled to reopen on September 18, but KURA said logistical delays and other unforeseen challenges at the construction site had affected the timeline.
In a public notice, the authority attributed the extension to delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment, as well as other site-related challenges beyond the contractor’s control.
“The authority and the contractor remain committed to completing the works to the required safety and quality standards within the revised timeline,” KURA said.
The authority said traffic arrangements would remain in place throughout the extended closure period and advised motorists and other road users to continue using alternative routes.
It also urged road users to follow directions from traffic police officers and traffic marshals to facilitate movement around the construction area.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused as we endeavour to transform urban mobility,” the authority said.

Eldoret Road is located in the Pumwani and Eastlands areas of Nairobi and provides a link between local streets and routes towards Jogoo Road across the Nairobi River.
The road connects traffic from Eastleigh through 18th Street, Ole Sironi and 19th Street to Uhuru Estate via Athi Road.
It also provides access to Wangu Road and Heshima Avenue towards Jogoo Road.
The bridge is also critical particularly to matatus travelling from Jogoo Road to town, who routinely use the route as an alternative whenever heavy traffic builds up along Jogoo Road during the morning peak hours.
Construction of the bridge on Eldoret Road began on May 18, 2026, with the works initially expected to be completed by September 18.
The extension means the closure will remain in effect for more than three months beyond the original completion date, with motorists expected to continue relying on alternative routes during the construction period.
A temporary pedestrian bridge has been erected at the construction site to allow pedestrians to move in and out of Uhuru Estate while the works continue.
KURA said the revised completion timeline would allow the authority and contractor to complete the project while meeting the required safety and quality standards.
