Security and governance expert Erick Okeyo has said a potential Kalonzo Musyoka and Edwin Sifuna ticket could present a significant opposition option ahead of the 2027 Presidential Election.
Speaking during on TV47 Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 23, Okeyo said the proposed pairing would bring together Kalonzo’s experience in national politics and Sifuna’s association with Raila Odinga’s political movement.
“The easiest ticket to sell against William Ruto would be a Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket,” Okeyo said, clarifying that the view was his personal opinion and not that of any political formation.
Okeyo cited Kalonzo’s long political relationship with the late Raila, noting that the Wiper leader remained allied with Raila even after Martha Karua was selected as his running mate in the 2022 Presidential Election.
“Kalonzo has been a loyal and faithful [two times] running mate of Raila Odinga. Even when Raila dropped Kalonzo and picked Martha Karua in 2022, he remained with Raila to the end,” he stated.
He also highlighted Sifuna’s long association with Raila’s political camp, describing him as someone who had been closely identified with the former ODM leader for years.
“Sifuna, on the other hand, you would call him Raila’s son. He has been secretary general of Raila’s party (ODM) for eight years and it was going to nine years,” Okeyo said.
According to Okeyo, this history could help Sifuna retain support among sections of Raila’s traditional political base, particularly those who believe he has been sidelined following changes within the opposition.
His remarks come amid renewed discussions over the opposition’s 2027 presidential ticket.
Okeyo also discussed the evolving opposition alliance following the rebranding of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition as The Ukombozi Alliance, as leaders continue negotiations over the structure and leadership of the coalition.
He maintained that there would be nothing unusual about Kalonzo expressing interest in having Sifuna as his running mate, while noting that the final decision would depend on ongoing political negotiations.
