Gor Mahia begin their SportPesa League title defence against Murang’a Seal at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, with coach Charles Akonnor demanding a response from his players after their disappointing CAF Champions League exit.
The 4 pm encounter will be the official opening match of the 2026/27 season for both sides after the first round of fixtures was postponed in August amid administrative deliberations.
Gor Mahia will enter the league campaign after being eliminated by Egyptian side Pyramids, losing 7-1 on aggregate. They went down 2-0 in the first leg at Nyayo before suffering a 5-1 defeat in Cairo on Sunday.
Akonnor was left frustrated by the defensive lapses that contributed to the heavy defeat, describing them as “elementary individual errors” that his players must eliminate from their game. We have to wake up,” Akonnor said after the Pyramids defeat, as the champions turn their attention to retaining the domestic crown.
The Ghanaian is expected to stick with his 4-2-3-1 formation against SEAL, with Alpha Onyango and Ebenezer Ocran likely to shield the back four. Jackson Dwang is expected to operate behind David Okoth, with the wide players tasked with stretching the visitors’ defence.
Akonnor could also ask his full-backs to be more measured in attack after the spaces left behind them contributed to Gor’s problems against Pyramids.
“We need to be more disciplined, especially in the middle of the pitch,” Akonnor said, highlighting the need for a stronger midfield screen against a SEAL side that can be dangerous in transition.
Gor have enjoyed the better of recent meetings. They beat Seal 3-1 away in May and came from two goals down to win 3-2 in January. That January comeback will serve as a reminder of Seal’s ability to trouble the champions, but also of Gor’s capacity to recover from difficult situations.
“We cannot continue making those mistakes,” Akonnor warned, with defensive concentration expected to be one of the major themes of Saturday’s encounter.
David Okoth will carry added confidence after scoring Gor’s only goal in Cairo, while Dwang remains one of the side’s main creative outlets. Shariff Musa and Patrick Essombe are among the options available on the flanks.
For Akonnor, the focus is firmly on the domestic competition following Gor’s continental disappointment. “We are focused on defending the title,” Akonnor said.
He will also want his players to use the lessons from the Pyramids tie as they begin their bid to retain the championship. “We must show a different mentality in the league,” Akonnor said.
Murang’a Seal, meanwhile, have had a considerably longer wait for competitive football. Their opening league fixtures were postponed, leaving them without a competitive match for almost four months.
They finished last season strongly, beating Bidco United 2-0 away and Mara Sugar 2-1 at home, while also recording a 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz. They lost to Kenya Police and Gor during the same run.
Coach Dennis “Des” Odhiambo is expected to set his team up in a 3-5-2 formation, which should become a 5-3-2 when Seal are defending. The wing-backs will drop alongside the three central defenders, allowing the visitors to congest the middle and limit space available to Dwang and Okoth.
“We gave Gor Mahia a lot of respect,” Odhiambo said when reflecting on their previous encounter, a mistake he will want his players to avoid at Nyayo.
Seal famously led 2-0 against Gor in January before losing 3-2, and Odhiambo has identified concentration as an area that needs improvement. “There was a lack of mental strength,” he said of that collapse.
The visitors are expected to switch quickly into attack when opponents regain possession, with the wing-backs pushing forward to support the front two and exploit spaces behind Gor’s full-backs. Odhiambo also believes Gor players’ experience had proved decisive in their previous meeting.
“Experience played a big role,” he said, recalling how the champions recovered after falling two goals behind.
The long break presents another challenge for Seal, but Odhiambo believes his players have used the period to prepare for the demanding opening fixture.
“We have prepared well despite the long break,” he said.
Seal will also need to show greater belief against the defending champions, particularly if Gor dominate possession and force them into a prolonged defensive spell. “We have to believe in ourselves,” Odhiambo said.
The tactical battle is likely to centre on whether Gor’s 4-2-3-1 can break down SEAL’s compact 3-5-2, while the visitors will look for opportunities to counter when the champions commit numbers forward.
For Gor, the match offers an immediate chance to put their recent disappointment against Pyramids behind them. For Seal, it is an opportunity to end their long competitive layoff with a performance that can unsettle the champions from the opening whistle.
