Winnie Odinga Runs Instagram Poll on Linda Mwananchi and ODM

Winnie Odinga kept her Instagram followers busy on Monday, November 2, sharing two polls that touched on Kenyan politics and everyday East African frustrations. Winnie Odinga ran a poll on her political future.  The aspiring Nairobi senator posted the polls on her account, @realwinnieodinga, with both stories still visible roughly 18 hours after they went live. What did poll show Winnie Odinga? The first poll asked:  “Which of these gives you the most headache in East Africa?” Respondents chose from three options, and travel requirements, specifically the yellow fever certificate rule, came out on top with 39%. Work permits followed closely at 36%, while mobile call and data costs rounded out the list at 25%.

The results reflect a real tension that many Kenyans and East Africans have voiced for years. Cross-border movement within the region, despite ongoing integration efforts, continues to be hampered by documentation demands and inconsistent enforcement of visa and health certificate rules. The second poll, labelled a “snapshot poll,” asked followers to pick from four options: Linda Mwananchi, ODM/Broadbased, Fight for ODM, and Relax/other. Linda Mwananchi ran away with the vote, pulling in 73% of responses. ODM/Broadbased and Fight for ODM each received 11%, while Relax/other lagged at just 5%. The poll was overlaid on a black-and-white photo of Winnie wearing a Lakers Basketball cap and sunglasses, giving the post a casual but pointed political edge. The poll is notable given Winnie’s own political positioning. As the daughter of the late Raila Odinga and a declared candidate for the Nairobi senatorial seat, her interest in tracking public sentiment around various political groupings is understandable. Together, the two polls paint a picture of a politician keen to stay connected with public mood, whether on domestic party politics or the day-to-day frustrations of regional life.
