Learning has been disrupted at Machakos Primary School after large rats invaded classrooms, following illegal dumping of household waste near the school fence and gate.
According to a whistleblower, teachers and pupils are having a difficult time. Big rats randomly enter classes during lessons, distracting learners and scaring pupils.
While the school compound itself remains clean, neighbours have developed a habit of dumping household waste along the road next to the school fence. The waste has been producing a bad smell and has become a breeding ground for rats and other pests.
The rats are alleged to cross into the school through the fence, disrupting lessons and endangering the health of pupils.
The school administration is said to have raised the matter with the relevant authorities on several occasions, but no action has been taken.
One teacher who requested anonymity said: “Hata watoto hawana amani na tumejaribu kuambia wakubwa lakini bado…”
Parents and teachers are now calling for urgent intervention by the County Government of Machakos, NEMA, and Public Health officers to stop the dumping and fumigate the area.
