A traffic police officer has died at Nairobi West Hospital after a lorry driver knocked her down and fled the scene while she was on duty in Makadara, Nairobi. Corporal Joy Muthoni was controlling traffic in Makadara when she was hit and killed by a speeding lorry. Corporal Joyce Muthoni Mwicigi was directing traffic at the intersection of Lungalunga Road and Mogadishu Road on August 21, 2026, at approximately 12:30 PM when the incident occurred, according to police sources at Makongeni Police Station. How the Incident Unfolded An Isuzu lorry bearing registration number KZQ 282, travelling from the House of Manji direction towards Donholm, approached the junction as Corporal Mwicigi signalled the driver to halt in order to allow other motorists to merge onto Mogadishu Road.
The driver ignored the instruction and ploughed into the uniformed officer before speeding away. The impact left Corporal Muthoni with a fractured pelvis, severe facial cuts, and extensive bruising. After striking the officer, the runaway lorry went on to collide with three other vehicles at the scene. Emergency responders transported her to Nairobi West Hospital, where she received treatment for approximately 26 hours. She was pronounced dead at 2:10 PM on August 22, 2026. Senior police officers visited the scene following the incident. All three vehicles damaged in the subsequent collisions were towed to a police yard for official inspection. The driver of the lorry had not been apprehended at the time of the incident, and the vehicle remains a subject of police interest. Traffic Commander Omukata confirmed the officer was on duty at the time, and five other people sustained injuries in that incident. In January 2020, another Nairobi traffic officer based at Langata Police Station was run over by a rogue matatu driver. Peter Lukote had been manning the Southern Bypass when he flagged down a public service vehicle belonging to Aberdareline Sacco, whose driver proceeded to run him over.
