The championships began over the weekend and run until September 3, featuring 35 events for athletes aged 35 and above.
Kenya has fielded a 20-member team at the global showpiece. Mwangi, a three-time national shot put champion, is making his maiden appearance at the Outdoor Masters Championships and is eager to replicate his indoor success.
“This will be my first time competing in the Outdoor Masters Championships. I was in the Indoors last year, and I was able to win gold,” said Mwangi.
At the 2025 World Masters Athletics Championships in Gainesville, Florida, Mwangi dominated the M40 shot put category, winning gold with a throw of 14.79m. Having already tasted global success indoors, the Kenyan has set his sights firmly on another title in Daegu.
“I am very ready. I am going to obliterate the field and come back home with the gold medal,” he declared. Mwangi, who begins his campaign in the shot put on Sunday, said his focus remains firmly on the event as he seeks to make the most of his first outdoor appearance.
His confidence has been boosted by an intensive training programme during the team’s pre-departure camp, where he concentrated on strength and conditioning.
“Training has been good. I have been focusing on gym work and strength building to be ready for the showdown,” he said.
With an indoor world title already under his belt, Mwangi now has an outdoor crown firmly in his sights as he seeks to underline his status as one of the leading Masters throwers on the global stage.
