Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has joined Kenyans in celebrating Mama Ida Odinga as she marks her 76th birthday.
In a message shared on his Instagram page, Babu described Ida as “the great Mama Ida Odinga” while wishing her good health, happiness and many more years.
“May this new year of your life be filled with good health, abundant blessings, happiness, and many more beautiful years ahead.”
Babu also offered a personal message to Ida, referring to her as “Mum” and thanking her for the impact she has had on the lives of many people.
“We love you, Mum.”
Ida Odinga Turns 76
Ida Odinga was born on August 24, 1950, making her 76 years old on Monday, August 24, 2026. Her birthday comes less than a year after the death of her husband, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died in India on October 15, 2025.
This is therefore her first birthday since Raila’s death.
Ida and Raila were married for more than five decades and had four children: Fidel, Winnie, Rosemary and Raila Odinga Junior. The couple met while Ida was studying at the University of Nairobi.
A Career Beyond Politics
Although widely recognised as Raila’s wife, Ida has built a public profile through education, women’s empowerment and business.
She trained at the University of Nairobi, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later worked as a teacher, including at Kenya High School, before taking on other leadership and advocacy roles.
In 1991, she became chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters, an organisation that promoted greater participation of women in political and public affairs.
Her work has also included supporting education initiatives. In 2020, a fundraiser associated with Ogande Girls’ School raised KSh176 million towards the construction of a modern library with a capacity of 500 students.
First Birthday Without Raila
Ida’s 76th birthday comes as she continues to navigate public life following the death of Raila Odinga.
In January 2026, she hosted ODM and UDA leaders at the family’s Karen residence during a gathering to mark what would have been Raila’s 81st birthday.
Babu’s message adds to the birthday wishes being shared with Ida as she begins another year of her life.
Gladys Wanga Celebrates Mama Ida
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has also joined family, friends and well-wishers in celebrating Mama Ida as she marks her 76th birthday.
Wanga praised Ida for her years of service, mentorship and dedication to the people, describing her as a woman whose grace, wisdom and strength continue to inspire generations.
“Your years of service, mentorship and dedication to the people remain deeply appreciated.”
The governor thanked Mama Ida for the mentorship and leadership she has offered over the years, while wishing her a long, healthy and prosperous life.
“May this new chapter bring you abundant joy, good health, peace and many more blessed years.”
