Egerton University has launched a parents portal that will allow parents, guardians and sponsors to access information about their children’s academic progress and other aspects of their university life.
The university said the portal presents an opportunity for them to become more involved in their children’s academic progress.
“Dear parents and guardians, your support plays a vital role in your son or daughter’s success at Egerton University. We invite you to register on the Egerton University Parents Portal and stay informed about your student’s academic journey every step of the way,” the university said in a message posted on its Facebook page.
The portal provides a student’s profile, including their registration number, academic programme and other general personal information.
It also shows the fee structure and the amount payable for a given financial period, as well as provisional examination results.
Parents will also be able to view their child’s accommodation status, including the name of the residential block, room number, bed number and the semester for which accommodation has been paid.
The university said parents will also receive important announcements and notices through the portal and stay updated on key academic dates, registration deadlines and examinations.
It said the system would strengthen collaboration between parents, students and the university community in supporting students’ academic success.
“The Parents Portal is designed to provide you with timely, secure and convenient access to essential information, enabling you to better support your student’s educational journey. Join the Egerton University Parents Portal today and partner with us in transforming lives through quality education,” the university said.
The new development comes as the university welcomes a new batch of first-year students who began reporting on Monday, August 17, for the 2026/27 academic year.
Hundreds of newly admitted students, accompanied by their parents and guardians, have been reporting to the university to begin their studies at the start of the semester in September.
The parents portal is now listed on the university’s website dashboard, but the portal was yet to go live as of Thursday, August 20.
However, questions around consent, authentication and the extent of parental access remain unanswered as the university prepares to activate the portal.
The portal’s delayed activation leaves room for the university to put in place safeguards to ensure the handling of students’ personal and academic information aligns with the Data Protection Act.
The university has not revealed whether students will be required to consent before parents can access their information.
It has also not said how parents and guardians will be authenticated, or whether students will have the ability to restrict access to their personal information and learning progress.
The privacy question has already emerged in public discussion around the new system, with some social media users welcoming greater parental oversight while others expressed concern about student privacy and confidentiality.
One user suggested that class attendance information should also be included, while another described the portal as an accountability measure, saying parents sacrifice to educate their children.
Other users urged universities to adopt similar systems, arguing that greater access to information would make students more accountable to the parents or guardians supporting their education.
