Six people, including three students, have been killed in a road accident involving a private van, a trailer, and a 14-seater matatu at Lessos Junction in the Mlima Punda area along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
The crash, which occurred on Friday, July 31, left several other passengers injured, with victims rushed to Burnt Forest Hospital and Plateau Hospital for treatment.
Police officers and residents launched an immediate rescue operation to free passengers trapped in the wreckage, with the extent of the damage telling its own story, the passenger side of one vehicle was completely ripped apart, the roof crushed, seats mangled, and windows shattered.
Uasin Gishu County Traffic Enforcement Officer Cornelius Chesimet confirmed the accident and said investigations had been launched to establish the exact cause of the collision.
The Lessos Junction tragedy comes just a day after another accident claimed two lives and left 26 others injured along the Muhoroni-Londiani highway.
That crash occurred at around 4.50am near a tunnel area approximately seven kilometres east of Fort Ternan, when a bus carrying mourners lost control and rolled off the road.
The two fatalities, a man and a woman, died on the spot, while the 26 injured passengers suffered a range of injuries including cuts, bruises, chest injuries, spinal injuries, and general body pain.
The back-to-back accidents add to what is becoming an increasingly alarming road safety crisis in Kenya.
The latest NTSA data shows that at least 2,150 people lost their lives in road accidents during the first half of 2026 alone, with pedestrians accounting for the highest number of fatalities at 836 deaths, followed by motorcyclists and passengers.
