The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has distanced itself from an online advertisement inviting deputy principals, heads of departments and directors of studies to a purported training on senior school assessment at a fee.
The advert, which falsely claims to originate from the examination body, asks interested participants to pay a facilitation fee of Sh3,000 for conference materials, meals and certificates.
According to the poster, applicants were required to express interest by Wednesday, May 20, confirm attendance by Monday, May 26, and complete registration through payment by Thursday, May 28, 2026.
KNEC, however, dismissed the advert as fraudulent and cautioned teachers and school administrators against sending money to individuals behind the scheme.
“We wish to caution the public that KNEC is not the organiser, nor is it involved in the training being advertised in this poster. As an organisation, KNEC is not in the business of collecting money from stakeholders for training on assessment. Beware of fraudsters. Kaa chonjo!” the council said.
The fake poster bears suspicious information that outrightly puts its credibility to question as it indicates that the training workshop would take place on May 23 at Kenyatta University — two days before the stated confirmation date and five days before the payment deadline.
The warning comes just days before KNEC opens the portal for senior schools to begin registering Grade 10 learners for continuous School-Based Assessments (SBAs) under the Competency-Based Education.
The assessments, administered by KNEC throughout the year, combine projects, practicals and written tests. Projects and practical assessments will be conducted between May and September 2026, while written tests will take place in Term Three and be completed by October 15, 2026.
All assessments will be accessed through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.
KNEC said the SBA scores in both Grade 10 and Grade 11 will each contribute 15 per cent to the learners’ final summative assessment score to be undertaken in Grade 12.
As part of preparations for the assessments, senior school principals have been asked to register their institutions as assessment centres before the deadline on Friday, May 22, 2026.
“The portal opened on May 7, 2026 and will close on May 22, 2026. Thereafter, the registered centres will be enabled to register their Grade 10 learners,” KNEC said.
To register schools as examination centres, principals are required to access the portal through KNEC Senior School Portal using their current school code as both username and password.
They will then be prompted to update a phone number through which a One-Time Password (OTP) will be sent to facilitate access to the registration system.
School heads are also required to upload the institution’s registration certificate before the system generates a Universal Centre Code and a School Registration Slip bearing the institution’s details.
“Download and print the school registration slip for your record,” the council directed.
KNEC said that institutions without an examination or assessment code should seek guidance through their respective Subcounty Directors of Education using the email address seniorschool@knec.ac.ke.
Once schools are successfully registered as assessment centres, registration of Grade 10 learners on the CBA portal will commence.
KNEC said all Grade 10 learners must be registered online through KNEC Grade 10 Registration Portal.
Learners will use the Assessment Numbers assigned to them in Grade 3, which serve as unique identifiers for tracking their progress throughout basic education.
Heads of institutions are expected to issue registration slips and sensitise parents and learners on the importance of the assessment numbers, which will remain in use up to Grade 12.
All learners will also be required to present their Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) performance reports during registration.
The registration slips must be downloaded and stamped by the heads of the junior schools where candidates sat their KJSEA examinations.
KNEC directed heads of institutions to download, sign and submit entry lists for all Grade 10 learners to the council through their respective Subcounty Directors of Education by May 30, 2026.
