Four people found dead in separate drowning incidents

Four people have been found dead in separate suspected drowning incidents, police said. Authorities are investigating all the cases.

In the first incident, police in Trans Nzoia County launched investigations after a body was discovered at Lukuna River. The incident occurred on March 19, 2026, at around 9:39 a.m., when officers found the body of an unidentified male adult, estimated to be about 54 years old, lying along the riverbank.

A preliminary examination revealed two deep cuts on the deceased’s forehead, prompting questions about the circumstances of the death. The body was taken to the mortuary, where it is awaiting post-mortem examination and identification.

Authorities are investigating whether the death was caused by drowning or foul play.

In Embu County, police are investigating a suspected drowning involving a prison warden in Embu West Sub-County.

The body of a male adult was found floating in Rupingazi River in the Ngomango area. Scenes of crime personnel identified the deceased as Collins Psenen Maklap, a prison constable attached to GK Prison Embu.

Police said Maklap had been missing since March 13, 2026. His partially decomposed body was retrieved and examined, with no visible external injuries noted.

Preliminary findings suggest he may have accidentally drowned while attempting to cross the river. The body was taken to Kakwegori Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem to confirm the cause of death.

In Kisumu West Sub-County, authorities are investigating a drowning incident in Ojolla area.

The body of Linus Onyango, a 38-year-old man, was discovered floating in Rota River near a bridge in Rota Village, Ojolla Sub-location, on Thursday. Family members said Onyango was last seen on March 17, 2026.

The body was moved to Port Florence Hospital mortuary, where it awaits post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Police say drowning cases have been on the rise nationwide, with at least one case reported daily.

Meanwhile, in Makueni County, a 20-year-old man died after being swept away by a swollen river.

Police said the incident was reported on March 20, 2026, by Kalamba Location Chief Harrison Mutuku.

The deceased, identified as Daniel Mutunga, a resident of Ulilinzi Village in Kibwezi Sub-County, drowned on the night of March 19, 2026, while attempting to cross the swollen River Kyewa.

Police said he was heading to Kalaani from Matiliku Market, where he runs a business, when the fast-flowing waters swept him away. His body was later found a few metres from the site of the drowning, with visible bruises on the legs and forehead.

Investigators processed the scene before moving the body to Kilome Nursing Home in Emali, where it awaits post-mortem examination. Authorities have cautioned residents against crossing flooded rivers, especially during the ongoing rainy season, due to the heightened risk of drowning.
