Passengers stranded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi have been moved to hotels as an aviation workers’ strike continued to disrupt flights.
Some travellers spent the night at the airport after flights were delayed or cancelled, before airlines began arranging hotel accommodation for affected passengers.
The strike by workers affiliated with the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has disrupted operations at JKIA and Moi International Airport, leaving thousands of passengers affected.
KAWU says the workers downed their tools after the government and the affected institutions failed to address their demands.
The union has cited grievances including employment benefits, collective bargaining agreements, salary issues, job security, prolonged contracts and career progression.
The strike has affected airport operations, with passengers reporting delays and limited information on the status of their flights.
Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has advised travellers to confirm their flight status with their respective airlines before travelling to the airport.
Airlines have also been forced to make adjustments to their operations as efforts to resolve the labour dispute continue.
