Athi River East Subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae said they belong to two male adults who drowned in the river on Sunday evening.
“The drowning incident report was made to the Athi River police station by a local administrator at 3.30 pm yesterday,” Mbae told the Star by phone on Monday.
Mbae said the reportee told police that two people had drowned in the river near the Nairobi – Namanga highway’s bridge in Athi River Subcounty shortly before he made the report.
He said the scene was visited by the orderly officer, duty officer and Directorate of Criminal Investigations personnel, attached to the same Athi River police station.
“It was established that a 27-year-old man removed his clothes and attempted to swim in River Athi to rescue his friend, who had already drowned, but in the process of rescuing, he also drowned. The two bodies were later retrieved and moved to Shalom Community hospital mourtuary awaiting an autopsy,” Mbae said.
The case is pending under investigation.
The incident happened barely two days after the body belonging to a woman was retrieved from the same River in Kitui County on Friday.
