This is a step by step guideline on how to apply for your Kenyan Passport

Applying for a Kenyan passport is now a fully digitized process through the eCitizen portal. As of 2026, the system is streamlined, but it still requires a physical visit for biometric capture.

Here is your step-by-step guide to navigating the process efficiently.

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before logging in, ensure you have original and clear photocopies of:

  • National ID Card (Must be the original).

  • Birth Certificate (Entry No. is required).

  • Parents’ ID Cards (Copies of both sides).

  • Recommender’s ID Copy (A Kenyan citizen, not a relative, e.g., a lawyer, doctor, or religious leader).

  • Three Passport-size Photos (Recent, white background, no glasses).

  • If renewing: Your old passport and a copy of the last three pages.

Step 2: Create/Log in to eCitizen

  1. Visit the eCitizen Portal.

  2. Log in using your ID number and password. If you don’t have an account, click “Create Account” and follow the prompts.

  3. Select “Directorate of Immigration Services.”

Step 3: Fill Out the Application

  1. Click on “Passport Application.”

  2. Choose the correct application type (e.g., Adult First Time, Renewal, or Minor).

  3. Select Passport Size:

    • 32 Pages (A-Series): KES 4,550

    • 48 Pages (B-Series): KES 6,050

    • 64 Pages (C-Series): KES 7,550

  4. Fill in your personal, residential, and family details exactly as they appear on your ID and birth certificate.

  5. Upload the required scanned documents (usually in PDF or JPG format).

Step 4: Payment

  1. Review your application carefully.

  2. Pay the fee via M-Pesa (Paybill 222222), Credit/Debit Card, or Bank Transfer.

  3. Critical: Download and print the Application Form, Payment Invoice, and three copies of the Receipt.

Step 5: Book a Biometric Appointment

  1. After payment, the portal will prompt you to schedule an appointment.

  2. Choose your preferred location: Nyayo House (Nairobi), Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, or Embu.

  3. Select a date and time slot. Print the Appointment Slip.

Step 6: Attend the Biometrics Session

  1. Arrive at your chosen center on the scheduled date.

  2. Carry your printed forms, receipts, and all original documents.

  3. Officers will capture your fingerprints and a digital photo.

  4. You will receive a tracking number or a collection slip.

Step 7: Collection

  • Timeline: Usually takes 10–21 working days, though it can vary based on demand.

  • Notification: You will receive an SMS or email notification when it’s ready.

  • Pickup: You must collect it in person from the same office where you did your biometrics. Bring your original ID and the collection slip.

Pro Tips for 2026

  • Early Bird: Slots at Nyayo House fill up fast. If you’re in a hurry, consider booking at regional offices like Nakuru or Embu.

  • Consistency: Ensure the names on your ID, Birth Certificate, and eCitizen profile match exactly. Discrepancies are the #1 cause of delays.
