Gor Mahia aim for maximum points against Sofapaka to consolidate KPL summit

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has made it clear that his side will go all out for victory against Sofapaka at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday as they look to cement their place atop the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) table.

K’Ogalo currently lead the log with 36 points, level with archrivals AFC Leopards but ahead on goal difference. The clash promises to be a high-stakes encounter in the race for the title.

“I think from our last game, the players did well. There were so many areas that I think we need to improve technically, and we have started working on it,” Akonnor said during a press briefing.

The former Ghana international highlighted the team’s meticulous preparation. “We gave them two days off and started training on Tuesday for our next game. So I think we add a lot of seriousness to our preparation,” he added.

Akonnor has studied Sofapaka closely and insists that Gor Mahia will approach the match with a clear tactical plan.

“We watched our opponents in their last game against Leopardsa, and from what we saw, they are a good team. We have a plan as to how to approach the game. We can’t talk about it, but we’re going to be serious about it,” he said. Despite Sofapaka’s positive qualities, Akonnor is confident his team can dominate the encounter if they perform at their peak.

“It’s a team that I think they are good. We need to play above ourselves to be able to beat them,” he noted.

Gor Mahia have also received a boost with the return of captain Geoffrey Ochieng, who has resumed full training following a long injury layoff. Akonnor believes the skipper’s presence is vital for team morale.

“Geoffrey is an important player. His leadership on and off the pitch helps the team. Having him back in training lifts everyone,” Akonnor said.

K’Ogalo will, however, be without the services of Harambee Stars playmaker Alpha Onyango, who was sent off against Bidco United after picking up two yellow cards. Despite the setback, Akonnor remains confident in his squad depth.

“Of course, it’s unfortunate to miss Alpha for this game, but we have quality players who can step in,” Akonnor said.

“We have prepared for situations like this, and I trust the squad to deliver even in his absence. Football is a team game, and others will rise to the occasion.”

Reflecting on Gor Mahia’s recent 2-1 comeback victory over Bidco United at Moi Stadium, Kasarani, Akonnor emphasized that the team’s spirit and resilience will be key against Sofapaka.

“Coming back to win against Bidco shows the character we have in the squad. We need to carry that mentality into every game,” he said.

Akonnor also revealed that individual and collective training sessions have been crucial in sharpening his team’s readiness.

“We are working on tactical drills, improving decision-making, and enhancing coordination between defense and attack. These moments make a difference in tight games,” he said.

The head coach is also clear about the mentality required to maintain their position at the top.

“The pressure is on us because we are leaders. We have to stay focused and avoid complacency. Every game counts, and we treat it seriously,” Akonnor said.

He also stressed the need for discipline and concentration, especially in key moments.

“In football, a single mistake can change the outcome. We must be disciplined, concentrated, and ready to adapt at any moment,” he said.

Akonnor is confident that with proper preparation, Gor Mahia can replicate their first-leg 2-0 win over Sofapaka at Dandora Stadium on September 27 last year.

“We remember the first-leg result, but every game is different. We have to respect Sofapaka and play at our highest level,” he said.

Sofapaka head coach Ezekiel Akwana, meanwhile, acknowledges the challenge but remains optimistic about his team’s chances.

“We were disappointed with the loss to Leopards, but football is about bouncing back. We will focus on our strengths and try to get a positive result against Gor,” Akwana said.

The Sofapaka coach is also confident that his players can handle the pressure of facing the reigning champions.

“Gor Mahia are a strong team, but we have quality players who can cause problems. We need to stay compact and exploit opportunities,” Akwana noted.

Akwana also emphasised that his team is motivated by the need to redeem themselves. “Every game is an opportunity to prove ourselves. The players are aware of what’s at stake, and we will give our best on Saturday,” he said.

With both teams eager to make a statement, the Nyayo Stadium encounter promises intensity and tactical intrigue. Gor Mahia will look to extend their lead at the summit, while Sofapaka seeks to restore pride and climb the league standings.

For Akonnor, the formula is simple: discipline, focus, and playing above themselves. “We want to win, but more than that, we want to show quality football. Saturday is an important game, and we are ready for it,” he concluded.
