Community, Laughter and Giving: Inside Sam the Barber’s Uhuru Park Fundraiser

Kenyans on Saturday converged at Uhuru Park for a public fundraising event aimed at supporting cancer treatment for Sam Kilonzo, a barber popularly known as “Sam the Barber.”

The initiative sought to mobilise funds for his upcoming medical care, with members of the public responding through cashless donations and on-site participation.

Kilonzo, who is associated with Empire Ship in Mombasa, was present at the park as the exercise unfolded.

The event was spearheaded by comedian and activist Eric Omondi, who has previously led similar fundraising drives for individuals in need of medical and social support.

Throughout the gathering, Omondi addressed the crowd, urging them to contribute toward ensuring that Kilonzo could access specialised cancer treatment.

Open-Air Barbershop Fundraiser

A temporary open-air barbershop was set up as the central activity of the day, with members of the public encouraged to get shaved as a symbolic gesture tied to their donations.

Omondi played an active role in mobilising participants, calling on individuals from the crowd to take a seat at the barber’s chair.

At one point, a foreign national was invited to participate, drawing laughter from the crowd after Omondi jokingly suggested a higher contribution amount.

The lighthearted exchanges were used to maintain momentum and encourage more people to support the cause. Despite the humour, the focus of the activity remained on raising funds for Kilonzo’s treatment.

Football-Themed Engagement

Football banter was used as another engagement tool during the fundraiser. Supporters of various English Premier League clubs were playfully singled out to encourage participation.

Omondi directed remarks at fans of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, urging them to contribute as part of showing solidarity.

A child wearing a Manchester United jersey was also brought forward during the event, with appeals made to the crowd to stand with Kilonzo through financial support.

The football-related exchanges drew cheers and reactions from attendees, helping sustain public interest throughout the exercise.

Digital Contributions and Performances

To facilitate contributions, organisers shared a Paybill number, 303030 account: TNHU, and a mobile number 0724590868 for direct transfers. The use of digital payment options allowed attendees to contribute conveniently and transparently.

The event also featured chants and musical performances highlighting barbershop culture and community unity.

Lyrics referenced the kinyozi as a space that serves people from different backgrounds, including youth and wealthy individuals, while emphasising solidarity among community members.

Artists and local figures joined in the performances, reinforcing the collective nature of the fundraiser.

Content creator Kabugi was among those present at Uhuru Park to show support for the initiative. As the event concluded, Omondi engaged Kilonzo in a brief discussion about the next steps in his treatment journey.

Kilonzo indicated that he was hopeful about accessing specialised care and expressed interest in establishing his own venture once his health allowed.
