Kenyans React as Prominent Comedians Bid for Edgar Obare’s Troubled BNN Gossip Page

Kenyan blogger Edgar Obare has announced plans to sell his popular gossip platform, BNN, which operates across Instagram, a website, and Telegram channels.

The decision follows a recent High Court ruling that ordered him to pay approximately KSh 6 million in damages for defamation.

The Defamation Lawsuit Outcome

The case stemmed from 2022 posts where Obare alleged an affair between model Bernice Nunah and businessman Kelvin Kaume Maingi.

Bernice Nunah, a prominent lifestyle influencer known for her work in fashion, travel, and luxury content, gained wider recognition as the second runner-up in the Miss World Kenya pageant (2019–2021 cycle).

A Nairobi court found the content false and damaging, awarding each plaintiff compensation, plus aggravated damages, interest, and costs.

Obare was also directed to issue a public apology and remove the offending material, with a permanent injunction against future similar posts.

Entertainers Express Interest in Acquisition

Following Obare’s sale announcement on December 15, 2025, several entertainers expressed interest in acquiring the platform.

Comedian and producer Eddie Butita, who runs the media company SPM Africa (parent to SPM Buzz and SPM Africa Studios), posted a formal bid:

“SPM Africa (parent company to SPM Buzz and SPM Africa Studios) board approves a resolution authorising management to place an offer to acquire BNN, following the platform’s announcement that it is up for sale.”

Butita’s longtime collaborator, comedian Abel Mutua, inquired about partial ownership: “Are you open to additional investors? Interested in acquiring a 30% stake in the company. Could you please outline what would be required from my end to make that happen?”
