Kenyan rapper DNA has opened up about why fans rarely see him perform at most old skool music events, despite being one of the artists who helped shape Kenya’s hip hop scene.
In a candid video making rounds online, the veteran rapper openly appealed to promoters, saying he is actively looking for performance opportunities, especially as the year comes to an end.
“Promoters, I am requesting for a job, on the 31st December. I am requesting, I am requesting again,” DNA said, before pointing out a pattern he believes has worked against him.
“Have you ever noticed that most old skool music events, I am never invited to perform? Even the recent big show, I was not there.”
According to DNA, his absence from such events is not by accident. He went on to list what he believes are the main reasons he keeps being sidelined.
“Let me tell you why you don’t see me in old skool shows,” he said. “Number one, I don’t know how to beg. Number two, the person I beefed with a long time ago is always on every show and he makes sure I am not part of it.”
The rapper also didn’t shy away from backing his own talent, boldly stating that performance-wise, very few artists can match his energy on stage.
“Number three, I perform better than everyone — except Redsan, Kenrazy and Juacali on a good day,” he added, a statement that has since sparked debate among fans online.
DNA further revealed that he is not just looking for any gig, noting that he expects a six-figure cheque to perform anywhere in Africa, a demand that underscores how he values his brand and experience in the industry.
His remarks have reignited conversations around old industry beefs, gatekeeping in the music scene.
While some fans sympathized with his frustration, others questioned whether unresolved rivalries and pricing could be costing him opportunities.
