How Obinna & Justina Syokau Inspired Harmonize’s Bald Shave in Honour of Raila

Tanzanian music star Harmonize has revealed the poignant reason behind his recent decision to embrace a completely bald hairstyle: it is a tribute to the late Kenyan politician, Raila Amolo Odinga.

The artist, known as ‘Konde Boy,’ shared his motivation on social media, posting a striking black-and-white photo of his clean-shaven head. He captioned the image with a direct dedication.

“I DID THIS FOR BABA @railaodinga5th #JOWI”

The Swahili term ‘Baba’ is widely known as a nickname for the former Prime Minister of Kenya.

A Shared Moment of Mourning

Harmonize’s act of shaving his head follows a pattern of public mourning and respect initiated by other prominent East African figures after Odinga’s passing.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga died on 15 October 2025 at the age of 80. His state funeral service was held on Friday, 17 October, with the burial taking place on Sunday, 19 October 2025, in Bondo, Siaya County.

The decision by the Tanzanian star appears to have been partly inspired by the actions of Kenyan media personality Oga Obinna and gospel singer Justina Syokau.

The Bald Inspiration

Oga Obinna, host of Obinna Show Live, publicly shaved his head shortly after Odinga’s death as a mark of respect and homage.

The act was widely covered in Kenyan media and trended heavily across social platforms. Obinna used his platform to reflect on Odinga’s legacy.Similarly, gospel artist Justina Syokau dedicated a song to the late politician, titled “Safiri Salama Raila Odinga (Baba),” further immortalising the statesman through creative expression.

Syokau was known for her frequent commentary and songs related to national political events.

Harmonize’s clean shave thus places him in solidarity with these creatives who used dramatic visual or musical means to honour the national figure.

Shaving as a Mark of Respect

In many African cultures, shaving one’s hair or adopting a simple hairstyle is a traditional, powerful gesture of mourning or respect following the death of a revered family member or community elder.

By taking the bold step, Harmonize is expressing deep and personal reverence for Odinga.

The gesture is particularly significant as Harmonize is Tanzanian. His tribute underscores the political figure’s regional impact, confirming his status as a pan-African leader whose influence crossed borders.

Fan Reaction and Legacy

Harmonize’s tribute drew immediate, mixed reactions from his vast following across East Africa.

Many fans praised his thoughtfulness and respect for a regional giant. Others questioned the political nature of the post.

Regardless of opinion, the action has cemented the image of the Tanzanian music star as someone connected to the socio-political narratives of the region.

It highlights how public figures often leverage their brand and personal choices to participate in significant cultural moments.
