Kenyan digital creator Wangari Thiong’o has opened up about her ongoing gastric balloon weight loss journey, revealing details about her experience, results, and how the procedure has impacted her mental and physical wellbeing.
Through a candid question-and-answer session on her Instagram stories, Wangari responded to numerous questions from followers eager to learn more about her transformation.
She disclosed that she underwent the gastric balloon procedure two months ago and has since lost 14 kilograms.
“I’ve been losing overall body weight. I don’t think you can target a specific area with the gastric balloon,” she said when asked whether one could lose weight and still maintain curves.

No Pain, Just Early Discomfort
When asked if the procedure was painful, Wangari clarified that her experience was relatively smooth.
“Personally, I didn’t experience any pain,” she responded.
However, she noted that there were mild side effects during the early stages of adjustment.
“Mainly nausea, weakness, and a bit of dehydration in the first month, but it gets much better than that,” she explained.
According to her, the side effects are temporary and tend to ease as the body adjusts to the balloon.
The Cost and Procedure Transparency
Wangari also shared that the procedure cost her approximately KSh 350,000, describing it as a worthwhile investment in her health and confidence.

Despite followers’ curiosity about where she had it done, Wangari maintained that she would only disclose that information after completing her journey.
“The only thing I won’t be sharing for now is where I got it done. I’ll share that once I’m done with the journey, just to be sure it’s completely safe and effective first and avoid influencing anyone’s decision unfairly,” she said.

Her remarks reflect a responsible approach to influencing, ensuring her followers make informed personal health decisions rather than imitating her choices without medical guidance.
Boosting Confidence and Mental Health
Beyond the physical transformation, Wangari credited the procedure for improving her mental health and self-esteem, noting that the changes have made her feel more comfortable and confident.
“It’s been amazing for my self-esteem and mental health. I feel more confident, lighter, and generally happier in my own skin,” she shared.
A Growing Conversation Around Wellness
The gastric balloon — a non-surgical procedure that involves placing a soft balloon in the stomach to limit food intake — has become increasingly popular among Kenyans seeking structured, medically supervised weight loss solutions.
Wangari’s openness adds to a growing trend among Kenyan influencers who are normalizing discussions around health, wellness, and post-pregnancy body recovery.
Her transparency offers an informed perspective on a procedure that is still relatively new in Kenya’s wellness landscape.
As Wangari continues her journey, she remains focused on maintaining her progress and educating her audience responsibly.

She has emphasized that her experience is personal and that anyone considering similar options should seek professional medical advice.
