Kenyan fashion designer has stirred conversation across social media after boldly declaring himself “the new Luo kingpin” following his viral appearance beside President William Ruto during the burial of the late Raila Amollo Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County.
The event, which drew leaders and mourners from across the political divide, was a moment of national reflection but it also sparked unexpected attention when photos and videos showed Bolo standing directly beside President Ruto during the ceremony.

“I Was Side by Side With the President”
Speaking during an interview with several entertainment journalists, Bolo expressed pride at the rare moment, saying that being positioned next to the Head of State was no ordinary occurrence.
“I was side by side with the President. Do you know what it means to be side by side with the President? It’s not easy to be side by side with the President,” Bolo said enthusiastically, his tone both proud and symbolic.
When asked why he believed he was granted that proximity, the artist confidently replied,
“I am the new Luo kingpin.”
His statement has since gone viral, sparking mixed reactions online. Some fans praised his confidence, while others questioned whether his declaration was meant in jest or a genuine political statement.
A Symbolic Moment
Following the funeral, Bolo doubled down on his sentiments with a post on his social media page, sharing a photo of himself beside President Ruto. His caption read:
“Thank you, @williamsamoeiruto, for standing side by side with me during this historic moment in our nation, as we lay to rest Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga in peace.”

The post was widely shared and commented on, with many Kenyans amused by his bold self-proclamation and others noting how symbolism and positioning at such national events often carry deeper meaning — especially in Kenya’s politically charged Luo Nyanza region.
The Debate Over the ‘Luo Kingpin’ Title
Bolo’s remarks come at a sensitive time for the Luo community, still grappling with the passing of Raila Odinga — a towering figure in Kenyan politics and a long-standing leader of the Luo people.
The title “Luo kingpin” has long been associated with Raila, and his death has reignited debate over who might eventually step into that political and cultural role.
While Bolo’s statement may have been partly humorous, it reflects a broader narrative emerging from Luo Nyanza: the search for a new political and symbolic leader after Raila’s era.

Whether Bolo’s bold declaration was a strategic PR move, satire, or a genuine ambition, one thing is clear — he has captured national attention, and his “side by side” moment with the President has cemented his place in the trending conversations of the week.
