Saldido Entertainment singer Willy Paul has urged President William Ruto to commemorate the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga with a statue in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

In a post on Instagram on Monday, October 20, 2025, the ‘Ngunga’ hitmaker shared that he had just returned from a successful show in Meru and suggested establishing a national day to honour Raila Odinga.

Expressing admiration for the late leader, Willy Paul described Raila as a figure whose legacy deserves permanent recognition. “Meru was a success. Happy Mashujaa Day. We need a Raila statue in Nairobi CBD; we need a Raila Day as well. I know President Ruto will grant that,” he wrote.

Paul’s call comes amid a nationwide reflection on Raila Odinga’s death on October 15, 2025, in Kerala, India, where he had been receiving specialised medical treatment. The late ODM leader’s passing has left a profound impact on Kenya, with citizens, political leaders, and international dignitaries mourning the loss of a man whose political career and activism spanned decades.

Nation Mourns Raila Odinga

Raila Odinga’s funeral attracted thousands of mourners, including heads of state, foreign diplomats, and ordinary citizens. The burial, held at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, October 19, 2025, marked the culmination of national tributes to a transformative figure in Kenyan politics.

During the ceremony, the former Prime Minister’s casket, draped in the national flag, was lowered into the grave as military personnel performed a 17-gun salute. Flowers were laid by family members, dignitaries, and citizens alike, symbolizing the nation’s gratitude for Raila’s lifelong service.

President William Ruto led the tributes, describing Raila Odinga as a patriot who consistently put Kenya above personal interests. He encouraged Kenyans to honour the late leader’s legacy through unity, courage, and dedication to democratic principles.

Prior to the burial, the public had the opportunity to pay their respects during extensive viewings across the country. Kasarani Stadium witnessed a massive procession, originally planned for Parliament Buildings, which had been adjusted to accommodate the overwhelming turnout.

Security agencies maintained order as mourners filed past the casket in a continuous display of reverence, reflecting the nation’s deep respect and admiration for one of Kenya’s most iconic leaders.
